My Fist time Safari tour in Ngorongoro Conservation Area

 Ngorongoro crater Tour

I visited the Ngorongoro Crater in August 2019, and other than seeing a Wildebeest river crossing, it was the best day of our 1-week safari. We started early, so we drove down into the crater through clouds, which was also a highlight for me. As you go further into the crater, you pass through the clouds and the crater floor appears, almost suddenly.

The crater floor is endless and the view from the bottom up the sides of the crater to the skyline is breathtaking. We saw sizeable herds of wildebeest, elephants, giraffes, buffalos and gazelles. We also saw a large group of hippos in and around their pond as well as flamingos around the lakes - the crater has 2 lakes! There are some rhino in the crater but they are elusive; we were not lucky enough to see one.

You are allowed out of your vehicle, but only at the hippo pond. This is where all of the jeeps converge and stop for lunch. There was a truck selling drinks / coffee and snacks. It's a great spot for pictures of the hippos, in and out of the water, and there is quite a large group of them. Even with the sun, it was cooler on the crater floor, we kept our fleece/down jackets on until after lunch.

The crater is such a special place and an absolute must see. Go early (the gate gets busy), and stay as long as you can. There are stops for photos on the way back up / out, don't forget to get your picture from up above.
